September 28 - October 5, Prix des Hebdos du Québec

The British Columbia and Yukon office hosted six journalists from Québec. They were the recipients of the Prix des Hebdos du Québec, an event sponsored by the Centre for Research and Information on Canada.

September 14, "Challenges to Citizenship in the 21st Century"
Synopsis of event, written by Cyndia Pilkington.

Organized by The Canadian Unity Council, the Greater Vancouver Citizenship Council and the Laurier Institution.

Featured a morning panel on sovereignty with Terry Glavin, Ellen Gould and Jonathan Manthorpe.

Lunchtime keynote address was given by Peter Legge and followed by an afternoon panel on individual versus collective rights which featured John Dixon, Stewart Philip and Margot Young.

January - April, The Referendum and Beyond: Fundamentals of Aboriginal Issues in British Columbia

From January to the end of April, CRIC-CUC co-sponsored a series of public lectures at Simon Fraser University.

In late May, Jocelyn Beaudoin and Gisèle Yasmeen visited the Nisga'a Lisims Government in New Aiyansh, near Terrace in northern BC. The Nisga'a signed a treaty with the Governments of Canada and British Columbia a few years ago and the visit was an opportunity to meet with leaders from the executive as well as welcome President Joe Gosnell as a Governor of the CUC. On our way to New Aiyansh, we had the opportunity to meet informally with leaders from business and the community in Terrace at a breakfast round table as well as for dinner. (Photos)

Then, it was on to Victoria for an inaugural CUC round table at the Royal BC Museum. Guests included local Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), provincial government officials, journalists, academics and community leaders. Three Vancouver Island CUC Governors were instrumental in the successful event's planning and execution. The regional office is currently acting on follow-up suggestions stemming from the round table.

May 9 - Canadian Club of Vancouver Luncheon

On May 9th, 2002, the CUC Regional Office sponsored a luncheon , organised by the Canadian Club of Vancouver, featuring Lieutenant Governor, Iona Campagnolo as keynote speaker. A transcript of the speech is available here. (Photos)
