SHEILA A. BROWN, Ph.D.

Dr. Sheila A. Brown continues to lead Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) in its pursuit of academic excellence in her second term as President and Vice-Chancellor. Home to more than 4,400 students, both women and men from across Canada and around the globe, Mount Saint Vincent University is recognized as a leader in personalized education, creative learning approaches and innovative research.

Dr. Brown's vision and her ability to forge progressive partnerships have helped establish MSVU as a leader among small universities. Since her arrival, MSVU has become increasingly well-known for its global approach, leading-edge distance learning programs and innovative mix of professional and liberal arts and science programs. Presiding over the University's strategic plan, Blueprint 2000, Dr. Brown's goal is to position the University to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future, as well as to provide a state-of-the-art learning and living environment for students.

A celebrated leader, Atlantic Business Magazine chose her as one of Atlantic Canada's top 50 CEOs for three consecutive years. She is also recognized for her involvement with many committees and organizations in the community at large. Her most recent appointment by the Honourable Pierre Pettigrew, Federal Minister of International Trade, is to the National Advisory Board on International Marketing of Canadian Educational Opportunities. Dr. Brown serves as Provincial President of the Council on Canadian Unity. She was also a recipient of the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002.

In her quest for excellence and accessibility in higher education, Dr. Brown takes a significant role in academic organizations regionally and nationally. She currently serves as Co-Chair of the Management Committee of the Nova Scotia Higher Education and International Trade and Marketing Plan. She is also a member of the Standing Advisory Committee on Educational Issues and Funding for the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada; is past Chair of the Council of Nova Scotia University Presidents; and is the past President of the Canadian Society for the Study of Higher Education.

One of the defining features of MSVU is its vibrant sense of community. Dr. Brown leads by example with her tremendous commitment to local business, charitable and community organizations. She is a Board member of Nova Scotia Business Inc. (NSBI) and the Neptune Theatre Foundation, is a member of the Order of Nova Scotia Advisory Committee, and for the second year is chairing the post-secondary campaign for the United Way of Halifax Region. She also volunteers her time in support of numerous youth-focused community activities.

Dr. Brown holds a BA (Honours) from the University of Cambridge, and an MA and PhD from the University of Alberta. Prior to coming to MSVU, she held academic and administrative positions at Mount Allison University, the University of Manitoba and the University of Alberta.
