Dr. David T. Barnard, President
University of Regina

Dr. David Thomas Barnard was appointed President of the University of Regina on July 1, 1998. Dr. Barnard came to the University of Regina in August of 1996 from Queen's University, where he held numerous academic and administrative positions for almost 20 years, to serve as Vice-President (Administration) and Professor of Computer Science. He holds guest professor appointments at four of the University's partner institutions in China (Peking University, Hunan University, Shandong University, and the Educational Institute of Jilin Province).

Born in New Liskeard, Ontario, Dr. Barnard has bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in Computer Science from the University of Toronto. He also has a graduate diploma in Theology from Regent College at the University of British Columbia. While at Queen's, he was at various times professor and head of Computing and Information Science, associate to the vice-principals (resources, research and human resources), and director of Computing and Communications Services.

He spent one year in Rocquencourt, France, as a visiting scientist at the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control. He has co-authored eight books and more than 50 refereed scholarly works, as well as another 50 technical papers and over 80 reviews. He is a member of the following professional associations:

Association for Computers and the Humanities

In addition to his work at the University, Dr. Barnard serves as Chair of the Board of SaskPower, the provincial electrical utility. He is a member of the following organizations and boards:

Dr. Barnard is married with three children. His personal interests include reading, poetry, music, art and architecture.
